3D INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS
3DTV Market Shipments Reach 21.1 Million
DisplaySearch and NPD Group released new penetration numbers for 2011 shipments of 3D-enabled TVs, totaling them at 21.1 million units worldwide, and accounting for 10% of all LCD TV panels shipped. For 2012, that number is expected to be 50 million units and a penetration of 21.6% of shipments.

With numbers that large, 3D experiences at home are becoming commonplace for a rapidly increasing number of viewers as each of the three pillars of 3D success continue to strengthen:

1)

Great 3D Products - Total available audience grows with creation of great 3D products

2)

Strong 3D Distribution - Transmission and broadcast standards are implemented, making it easy to transmit and decode strong 3D signals

3)

Good & Plentiful 3D Content - Content creators and programmers continue to fill the 3D content pipeline with great content.

3D@Home continues to facilitate projects to accelerate this adoption with our Steering Teams, websites and membership activities.

STEERING TEAM NEWS
Steering Team 1: 3D Content Creation
ST1 continues the development of the \'Day in the Life\' project where video sequences will be produced on the preparation and planning that for a high-quality 3D production. The group has outlined 5 different genres including live sports broadcasts, live performance, episodic content, converted content and studio set-ups. Venues have been identified for the various parts of the production, and the team is currently seeking persons and companies that have in-kind resources for the project. Contact ST1 Chair, Kevin Wines for more information.

Steering Team 2: 3D Transmission, Distribution and Storage
ST2 has launched the revised Eco-system Diagram with an expanded section on meta-data. This Flash¢ç based, interactive graphic highlights the areas already being addressed by SMPTE, BDA, MPEG, CEA or other standards organizations, and also shows areas that are not being addressed. We would like to see these gaps met by standards organizations in order to more quickly advance 3D across broadcast systems. The updated Eco-System chart can be viewed at the website or members can download an off-line version from the members-only section on Kavi.

Steering Team 4: 3D Consumer Products
ST4 just launched the new 3D Technology Matrix as a part of the 3D Eco-System. This diagram was previously in poster form, but has been redesigned for the website for greater and simplified usage. Members are encouraged to download the 3D Technology Matrix for use in corporate 3D presentations or educational materials. Non-members are encouraged to link to the diagram and reference it when looking to educate staff or external audiences on 3D display technologies. Additional enhancements are also being planned - any company with drawings of the 3D technologies listed is encouraged to send them to 3D@Home for possible usage and attribution.

Steering Team 5
ST5 continues to develop its plan for a subjective human factors study to get statistically-relevant data on 3D viewing preferences useful to creators of 3D content. A thorough study of what types of 3D techniques are most appreciated and enjoyed by a wide sample of 3D consumers, correlated with vision health, age and genre, has received a warm reception by 3D creative professionals thus far. Creating and evaluating the content is underway, however, assistance in certain areas is still needed. Join the next ST5 call to hear more and identify ways to assist in these efforts.
